What is Plasterboard?

Last updated: May 28, 2025,
Whether you’re renovating a room, planning a media wall, or just wondering what your home is actually made of, plasterboard is one of those materials that shows up everywhere, but it rarely gets talked about. So, what is plasterboard? And how does it differ from things like drywall or sheetrock?

Plasterboard in Plain Terms

At its simplest, plasterboard is a flat panel made of gypsum pressed between two layers of strong paper. It’s lightweight, easy to cut, and designed to be fixed to wooden or metal framing inside buildings.

You’ll hear different names depending on where you are:

In the UK

You'll typically hear it called plasterboard.

In the US and Canada

You’re more likely to hear drywall or sheetrock (a brand name)

Regardless of the label, it’s the same reliable material used to form internal walls and ceilings in everything from homes to offices to retail spaces.

What is Plasterboard Made Of?

The core ingredient is gypsum, a mineral prized for being naturally fire-resistant and sound-insulating. Once encased between sheets of paper, the result is a strong but lightweight panel that can be installed dry without the need for traditional wet plastering. Plasterboard is available in a range of variations:

Standard

Used in general areas like bedrooms or hallways.

Moisture-resistant

Designed for kitchens, bathrooms, and utility spaces.

Fire-rated

Common in commercial builds or flats with specific regulations.

Acoustic

Helps reduce sound transmission, ideal for flats or media walls.

Common Sizes and Thicknesses

So, what sizes does plasterboard come in? Most sheets in the UK come in the following dimensions:

1200mm x 2400mm

Standard size that suits most domestic applications.

1200mm x 1800mm

A more manageable option for smaller spaces.

Thickness

Generally ranges from 9.5mm to 15mm, depending on strength and application.

Boards are cut and scored easily, making it simple to trim them down to fit awkward areas or work around things like sockets, alcoves, or ventilation.

What Is Plasterboard Used For?

The real appeal of plasterboard is its versatility. Builders and DIYers alike rely on it for all sorts of jobs:

Drywall and Plasterboard: What’s the Difference?

People often confuse drywall, plasterboard and plastering, but they are different ways to finish a wall. Plasterboard (or drywall) is fixed in place dry, then either skimmed with a thin coat of plaster or taped and filled. Traditional plastering, by contrast, involves applying wet plaster directly to walls in layers, which is much more time-consuming and labour-intensive.

Plasterboard systems and builds are quicker, neater, and more adaptable, which is why they’ve become standard in new builds and renovations.

What About When You Need Access?

One challenge with plasterboard is that it conceals everything behind it, from pipework and wiring to valves and ventilation. That’s fine until you need to get at those things.

Instead of cutting a new hole whenever there’s a plumbing or electrical issue, you can install one of our flush, discreet panels that blend in with the rest of the wall or ceiling. FlipFix panels are:
